Experimental approach

The main experimental approach in these studies has been gene targeting in embryonic stem (ES) cells of the mouse. In order to allow the researcher to introduce mutations into specific genes, Rajewsky has developed Cre/loxP-based conditional gene targeting, a technology that is now widely used in biomedical research. His lab is striving to further improve the efficiency and flexibility of techniques for achieving gene inactivation, activation, and replacement in vivo at will. Recent advances also allow for the acceleration of genetic in vivo analysis by generating mice carrying compound mutations directly from genetically manipulated ES cells.
